Time Tunnel is an attempt at recovery: not just of a place, but also of a time. It began in early 1997, when I traveled through the eastern part of Taiwan during a two-month "wandering" project and discovered by chance an old tunnel that had been abandoned because a new one had been built.
The tunnel became both my shelter and my workshop. In all, I spent some 20 days living inside it, thinking, writing, and making art. Furthermore, by using materials that are readily at hand--such as empty barrels and water from a ditch nearby--I scrubbed and cleaned the thick dust that had accumulated on the walls of the tunnel, revealing eventually the original shine of the steel plates with which the tunnel was constructed. |
